Seeing Sideways and Right-side Up
Final research project: Amelia Earhart
I’ve always been fascinated by her story and her personality. She was “one of the boys” in her time, breaking numerous societal barricades and proving that women can do anything they want to.
Her disappearance has always intrigued me, too and the mystery surrounding it. She disappeared July 2, 1937 somewhere over the vast Pacific Ocean. She was legally declared dead two years later on January 5, 1939 when no trace of her could be found.
Her remains are still believed to be “lost at sea” to this day despite numerous false claims suggesting her remains have been found.

Recap 4-11-11

Last Monday’s class was interesting. We all seemed more relaxed and at ease with each other more than we had been before. It was interesting to see everyone’s answer to “Why are you here?” It was a bit of a therapy session for me because I was dealing with my friend, Emma’s suicide which coincided with my reason for why I’m here. People understand and were sympathetic and my presented piece of work was perceived well.

Kinda sucks that we’re all connected more now that the class is almost over…

Fear project recap

The only thing I kept thinking about during everyone presenting their Fear projects was this: “Who knew we all had so many relatable fears?”

The human spirit is always relatable.

And as for presenting my own fear, my fear of getting Alzheimer’s disease like my grandmother, it was instant relief. Just talking about it for once was rewarding. My suicide prevention blog (fornowjustcarryon.tumblr) was also discussed and my fear of relapsing into depression/suicidal thoughts. All of which was received with open arms.

Taboo subjects are not always so taboo.

“What’s your biggest FEAR?” (In progress)

This project is sadly still “in progress” as far as my finished product goes as I’m still compiling proper images, but I have some thoughts and a process in the works so here’s what I’ve got brewing so far.

My biggest fear: getting stuck in neutral in life.
I’ve been in college since the fall of 2005. Graduation is finally in sight for May 2012, but I feel like it’s so far away. Also, in these past 5 years I have seen numerous close friends either graduate college, get a great job, get married, and/or have children. And then there’s me: still in college, still working the same job, still looking for “Mr. Right.”

My finished piece with focus on combining my fear of neutral and the things that go with it by putting together a graphic poster using photos and items that relate to it. Here’s is my required scientific method thought process:

  • Examine the situation: (see above)
  • Formulate an experiment: surveying peers/strangers and asking them what the concept of being “successful in life” means to them (as a society)
  • Hypothesize expected outcome: I think the mot will claim that you need to be married with a family and a successful job because that is what has been dictated to them.
  • Conduct the experiment: I surveyed 50 people, I’m still waiting to hear back from 16 of them, but the majority have agreed that “College, great job, married, and a family” are the way they feel living a successful life is.
  • Observe the reaction: Many were very curious as to why I needed the response and what these questions meant to me. I remained a mystery which actually only fueled the fire more.
  • My hypothesis matched my results as far as the overall answer, however I was unprepared by how curious everyone would be about the project. My artwork/life has never stirred this kind of interest before especially considering I had nothing to show for my project other than the survey. Perhaps being left in the dark with the idea is was caused the interest?

Again, this project is still IN PROGRESS.

“FIND YOUR BLISS”
TASK: For the bliss exercise, do whatever makes you happiest. You can choose the time as well as the subject, but I ask you to honestly do it. Please don’t use this time to catch up on other commitments. This is time for YOU. It is time for you to get away from all the stuff that bogs us down.__________________________________________________________
Music has always played a pivotal role in my life and is something I’m always passionate about. I can’t create music (I wasn’t given the talents for it) but I have a life-long respect for it. Music has been there through thick and then with me. The most amazing part about music for me is when a song hits you because it describes everything you’re feeling. It’s comforting because then you realize you’re not alone at all — that the person who wrote it was feeling the exact same way.
For the bliss assignment I went to the LUNA Music Annex on Massachusetts Ave. here in Indianapolis. Even though our class time is held on a Monday, I specifically went on a Tuesday because new music is always released on Tuesdays.
I’ve been going to LUNA for about 4 years now… the place never changes. Which is my favorite part. It’s been around for 17 years now. The location on Mass Ave is small, cluttered, and confined. It has two levels: the basement devoted entirely to vinyl. It smells musty and the olive green concrete floor is crumbling in places; I actually have a piece of it. I spend most of my time there exploring materials that are sometimes more than 40 years old. I put the headphones on, play a track or two and for a few minutes I’m not stressed or tired. My constant headaches aren’t pounding in my skull. I am FREE. I am anywhere I want to be. I’m at peace.
The above artwork was designed using all 5 senses to depict my place of bliss. This is how I see, hear, smell, taste, and feel LUNA when I spend my time there.

“OUT OF CONTEXT”

TASK: You were given a random stuffed animal. Use it in a context that does not resemble the context it was intended for. Discuss.

Object: Ty Beanie Babie — is now a paintbrush and my canvas is now scrap piece of  cardboard.

Oddly enough, this worked really well as a paintbrush. I mean, I obviously couldn’t refine anything and it was hard to hold onto, but for overall it worked well. It was intriguing to use something other than a brush and canvas to paint on.

* I painted the word “HOPE” because I also run a suicide prevention blog and HOPE is a common theme on it.

“DOES IT ADD UP?”

TASK: Describe/walk your way through a project and discuss
the following steps of a process:
Inspiration>Idea>Concept>Trial>Refine>Product.

Inspiration: Sailor Jerry tattoos
Idea:
needing to complete a set to go with the sparrow “Stay Golden” I have on my right foot. I discovered the symbolism behind an anchor. Keeping a ship grounded so it can’t float away.
Concept:
anchor sketch.
Trial:
Trevor sketched it to his style (I wanted it to match the sparrow/type he did on the other foot). He then copied it and applied it to my foot as a trace after sanitizing the area and instruments.
Refine:
outlining and shading. PAINFUL.
Product:
finished anchor with a scroll reading “Believers never die…”

Discussion — Field Trip

We received word before class that we were going to be going on a “field trip”… I packed up my camera and was fully prepared to document the experience and explore the new place.

We went to the 4th floor of the building we were already in for our “field trip.”

I wasn’t amused.

We saw the 3D lab were they make cool stuff. And a huge tv monitor that served no purpose in my opinion. Nothing there interested me even though I know other people were geeking out, I just didn’t get it. I’m not really techy and I tried to find something interesting about everything but really I just felt lost.

I left class bummed and didn’t take a single picture because I couldn’t find anything interesting enough (for me at least) to capture.
